"Go, Preach what I tell you.." Jonah 3v2

Call to the Pastorate

During my time at Rosyth I accepted a number of speaking engagements and Christians pressed upon me that this is what I should consider doing.  I was attending Belluvue Reformed Baptist Church in Edinburgh http://www.bellevuebaptistchurch.co.uk at that time and the Pastor and Elders set me aside for the ministry to seek God as to where that should be. I was ordained in 82 subscribing to the historic Baptist Confession of 1689 and then called by Calvary Evangelical Church Brighton, England.  http://www.calvary-brighton.org.uk to be their full-time Pastor/Teacher, joining two other Elders on a team.

Some of the present fellowship at Calvary

This ministry was greatly blessed. My fellow Elders were two of the most Godly, gentle and visionary men I have known. They had built a foundation upon which we could build together. The Church fellowship grew and was full of many Nationalities. It was the most enjoyable ministry I had ever experienced and such a loving, honest family of Christians of all ages and Nationalities. We had strong links with and helped the founding of a Reformed witness amongst the Tamils in North Sri Lanka And trained their Pastor(s) in ministry setting them aside for the work. My fellow Elders visited them for teaching missions and support. We also had our own Chinese speaking group who were very active in the schools of learning in Brighton. In all during the time we had around 50 different ethnic groups through the fellowship.

The secret, if you can call it that, of our growth was that at the heart of our Church life was a simple, lively, relevant expository ministry from the pulpit. Our worship was reverent and meaningful and we in the eldership believed passionately that the applied Word of God could and did change lives. During this time we saw a lot of folks old and young turn to Christ and many converted during the expositions.

During that time I was approached by the Hampden Du Bose Academy in Zellwood Florida to become their Director of Discipleship training. Calvary sent me to investigate the call and go on their behalf  sent by the Church and establishing a solid link. May and I spent some time in Florida investigating and arranging Radio broadcasts then came back to Brighton happy to accept the call and be sent by Brighton.

Phil one of the Elders was to leave his teaching job and take the fulltime role, thus releasing me. Then things changed. Les the older Elder was suddenly taken into heaven and Phil and I had to lead a Church in shock and mourning together with the impending change. So Phil was left, having given up his job.  Then...we couldn't get a visa and were left high and dry!..oh what fun it is serving the Lord!  However we felt that Phil and the Lord were more than able to manage so May and I moved back to Scotland to enable Phil to take the Church forward (he is still there to this day.. one of God's diamonds!)...so starts another phase.

Leave and go into the desert and wait there! Acts 8v26/27

Although Fife is not the desert it was atime of waiting for us. We lived in Halbeath and really didn't realise just how much we needed to come apart before we fell apart! When you are in a vibrant demanding ministry you are like a finely tuned racehorse...when you stop you feel like Steptoes horse! But we needed the countryside and rest.

During this time I led home Bible studies for Rosyth Baptist Church and preached regularily at West Baptist Church Dunfermline whilst attending when able our old fellowship at Belluvue Edinburgh and doing ministry there....so it was not that quiet, but I suppose not having direct Pastoral care for a specific people enabled May and I to minister freely.

An old friend had moved to Sunderland a town in the North East of England and approached the Eldership concerning my availability for the Pastorate
